Jamaican sorrel, also known as hibiscus is a beverage made from dried sepals of the hibiscus sabdariffa plant. Its known for its vibrant red colour, tart flavour and numerous health benefits. Sorrel is a good source of antioxidants, which can help protect the body against damage from free radicals.
Its packed with antioxidants like anthocyanin's and flavonoids vitamins and minerals and is traditionally enjoyed during the Christmas season in Jamaica and other Caribbean islands.
Culinary suggestions....
Bring 4 parts sorrel to boil in 3 parts water, add grated ginger, cloves and crushed allspice and boil until the sorrel begins to plump and swell, approx. 10 minutes. Drain and allow to cool, add white rum to taste (optional!)
